More about this scene
The Thames and Severn canal opened in 1789, connecting the River Severn with the Thames at Lechlade. It provided the corn and cloth mills of Chalford with the means of finding new markets for their wares until this mode of transport was superseded by the Gloucester to Swindon railway line. The canal closed to commercial trade in 1933.
