Chatburn, Gisburn Road c.1950

More about this scene
The sign tells us that Gisburn Road leads to Clitheroe, hub of the Pendle Forest area. Stone walls, finials, setts, dripstones and lintels characterise Chatburn and the neighbouring villages. Laura described busy mill days: 'We wove miles of Chatburn checks … it was dobby weaving, which went into turbans out East and tea towels out at Colne!' The Brown Cow and the Black Bull, built in 1855, were voted 'excellent', as was Hudson's ice cream shop, which was housed in what was originally the toll bar premises.
