More about this scene
St Bartholomew's was founded by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester in 1078 for the city's lepers and sick poor. It is perhaps the oldest hospital in the country. Only part of it now remains, completely restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott, RA in 1874. Chatham's naval memorial spears the skyline in the centre of the picture.
