More about this scene
Chawton is two miles from Alton. The A31 changed to a local access road when the bypass was built in the 1970s, and Chawton is now bypassed completely. One longstanding local commented: 'On a summer's evening, I can now hear the steam trains on the Watercress Line - you couldn't when the A31 was here.' The black and white marks on the kerbstones in front of Jane Austen's house make drivers aware of the junction, increasing forward visibility. The black and white marks on the A31 sign, and the 30mph sign, were a requirement of the time, just as a grey pole is today. The 30mph speed limit was introduced in urban areas in 1935.
