More about this scene
The new building on the corner of the High Street, with its three large shops and two floors of flats above, can be seen in greater detail in this photograph. In its substantial size, it is clearly out of scale with the Tudor-styled buildings erected by the Onyx Property Investment Company in the 1930s. This incongruity is matched by the new sodium streetlights mounted on concrete lamp standards that soar above the surrounding roofs. These, I am happy to say, have now been replaced by new lamp standards which are more in keeping with the village atmosphere.
