Once a common sight throughout the country, roadside petrol pumps such as those shown here are a severe fire risk, and are now placed well away from the kerb. The bridge just beyond the pumps goes over the railway line; this was the scene in 1894 of a terrible rail accident resulting in 14 deaths when an express train ran into a wagon that was being shunted here.
