More about this scene
The bridge on which the boys are standing was relatively new when this photo was taken. It was built in 1890 to replace an earlier iron bridge which had been swept away in the Great Flood of August 1888. The town has always been particularly susceptible to flooding. A prevention scheme was introduced in the 1960s.
