Does anybody remember the name of a pub that was in Victoria Road South? It was on the left hand side around 75 yards from Duke Street on the way to where the police station can now be found. It formed part of the island of buildings that stood between VRS and the Railway Station service road but must have been demolished in the early 1970s to make way for the present office block. Does anybody have any memories of the place?
I trained and qualified as an SRN in 1963 at Chelmsford and Essex Hospital. It was 3 years of hard work and fun. I wonder what has happened to the building.
At 16 I joined the Essex Police Cadet School in 1970. The School was built in the late 1960s. Training at the School was for two years. On site education, accommodation and sports facilities was provided. We also were 'bussed' to Chelmsford College of a Further Education - here on a part time basis we obtained qualifications.

Looking for help naming a record shop that was in Duke Street in the mid seventies. It was on the left after the Lion & Lamb if you were heading towards the High Street.

I recall going with my mother in the 1960's to visit her friends who were the landlord and landlady of a pub called The Clockhouse.
I recall it had a small tower with a clock and a small, raised garden at the back.
I just tried looking it up on Google but could find no trace?.
Can anyone recall this pub and tell me its location?

After watching an episode of Stephen Fry's QI this evening, one of his topics sent my thoughts back to a memory of my childhood in Chelmsford in the 1960's. Smith's shop in the High Street, opposite the then Bond's store.
I use to beetle my Mother to go in that shop, with the whizzy hanging canisters that flew across the ceiling from the various counters to the cash desk. Most seem to remember these ...see more
During the 1950s Reverend Gould would cycle down London Road to hold services here. Miss Flower and Janice Olley were two of the Sunday school teachers at the little school further up London Road past Friars WalK where a coke stove would warm the stone building.
my father had always said there was a statue of an ancestor, after whom i was named, in chelmsford. as i live at the other side of the planet, new zealand, i have never been to check his story. but there he is. my father left england for new zealand in 1925. he never went back and passed away in 1980, aged 85. i am on facebook. look me up
I have a photograph (taken by Fred Spalding) of all the (mainly female) workers who did the night shift at Hoffmann's Turret taken in January 1919. One of the workers is my grandmother aged 23. Can anyone supply any history to what these workers may have actually been doing? Would they have been making ball bearings for the tanks or other gun turrets? I was still at school when the Queen came to Chelmsford for the first time. I don't know what the occasion was, nor the year, but at the time my father, Roy Iliffe, was working as a dentist and we lived next door to St Anne's school, which I attended between 1957 and 1961. I still have family in the town, as it was then, my aunt was a teacher and my uncle and cousins played cricket. My grandfather was also a dentist.
