Chepstow, Castle And River Wye c.1930

More about this scene
The Wye has long been famous for its salmon fishing, as records going back to the 10th century show. It has been controlled over the years in an effort to conserve stocks. Farther downstream from here on the other side of the bridge were the premises of the Wye Fisheries, Stuart House. In front of the building was a bay hedge from which people could pluck a few bay leaves with which to cook their salmon. Both the Wye and the Severn are also fished for elvers, tiny eels, which are used both for food and for restocking eel fisheries in Europe and Asia.
