More about this scene
The Market House (or Town Hall) with its clock and bell turret was built in the 18th century by extended and largely reconstructed by Lord Chesham in 1856. It had an open ground floor and town hall above it and, although not as archtecturally interesting as nearby Amersham's 17th-century market hall, was a key feature in the town. It was demolished in 1965 in the alleged interests of those great behemoths, the motor car and the lorry. The fine late 19th-century shopfronts to the right have mostly gone by Smith Brothers is still a stationers, JPS.
