More about this scene

The High Street widens out into the Broadway with Blucher Street merging from the left and the High Street continues north as far as the foot of White Hill. The Broadway was formerly known as Pillory Green for obvious reasons but this name gradually fell out of use. This late Victorian view shows one of the cottages surviving next to the newly rebuilt Cock pub selling Salter's Fine Ales and Stout.

If Only The River Was As Clear Now!
Contrary to the notes on this photo the house with the two bay windows did not replace the weatherboarded one in view 40547. The two structures are side by side, though the weatherboarded one may have been demolished at the same time to make easy access for the extension to the house. This elevation is that of the extended house built behind the weatherboarded structure (when viewed from the river) ...see more

Oswald Hickson Collier & Co Solicitors

I left school (Lowndes County Secondary School for Girls) in 1967 at the age of 15 and went to work at Oswald Hickson as office junior. Our offices were above Westminster Bank, just out of the photo on the right. I worked my way up and became secretary to one of the partners but left in 1979 to get married. Humprhey The Shoe Menders (Old Jack, Young Jack, Jean And Marjorie)
Dear Tim, I remember the shop very well and used to visit with my Mum, Phyllis Cooley who was the daughter of May Clarke, the sister of Old Jack's wife, i.e. your grandmother. I used to call them Uncle and Aunt but really they were my Mum's cousins and that makes us second cousins. I was born and bred in Chesham but moved to London in 1979 when I got married. H J Humphrey & Son Shoe Repairers
My grandfather and father ran Humphreys Shoe Repairers in Chesham High St throughout the 1950's to the 1980's. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers my dad and grandad (or my mum Jean) and also those who used the shop to get their shoes repaired. Tim Humphrey

Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
