More about this scene
This side of Bridge Street in the 1880s and 90s could quite easily have been renamed Ironmongers Row. As well as Newman, who had an interesting line in metal trunks and chests, bird-cages and bicycles, there was Thomas Wood & Sons for lamps and household appliances, including zinc baths, and Shaws for general goods and cutlery.
