More about this scene
The centre was in use with temporary structures shortly after the war, but was formally built between 1950 and 1951 as a part of the Festival of Britain. The designs for the 107 acres of land included huts for 400 boys and girls, and a further 200 could be accommodated under canvas. Tennis courts and bowling greens and other sports facilities, which were funded by Chigwell Urban District, were made available for local people.
