More about this scene
These half-timbered houses, overlooked by the 15th-century church of St Mary the Virgin, were once homes for local tradesmen from the Jacobean Chilham Castle estate. When this picture was taken, the motor car was a relatively new method of travelling up the hill to the village grocery store, A E Hammond (right). Some visitors, however, still preferred to travel by traditional horse and cart.
