More about this scene
From the town bridge, we can see the sluice gates in a lowered position. The buildings behind were attached to the rear of the mill and also contained stabling. The square classical building with a pediment is Monkton Hill Wesleyan church, which stands on the site of the Black Horse (this inn is documented in 1750; it was built on land belonging to Monkton Manor). The land was purchased in 1900, and the church was completed and opened in 1909. Running across the middle of the picture is the weir, which maintained the head of water; it has now been removed during the re-management of the Avon. On the bank of the island behind the trees, two end stones can still sometimes be seen.
