More about this scene
Presiding over the town's broad High Street is the 120 feet high, pinnacle-topped tower of St James', which dates from the 15th century. In the churchyard a tombstone to Martha Hiron, who died in 1708, bears this verse: 'Here lieth a virgin pure and chaste, Who did not want her time to waste. She dearly longed to married be, To Christ her Lord and none but he. And now she has her soul at rest, With glorious sounds for ever blest.'
