More about this scene

The relics of St Cuthbert are alleged to have rested in twelve places, in what is now Lancashire, during the 9th century. One was identified as Mele (an alternative spelling of Meol), and in accordance with the custom of the day, an eponymous house of prayer was raised in the saint's honour. St Cuthbert's, Churchtown is reputed to date back to pre-Conquest times, but there is no evidence to support this. The present building was raised in stone in 1571 and rebuilt between 1730 and 1739. The tower and surmounting spire were refurbished in 1850. The Conservative Club is housed in what was once the Grammar School. Built in 1729, it became a National School in 1826. The school itself moved to a new building in 1889 when it became known as St Cuthbert's Church of England School. Appropriately enough, Churchtown's present primary school is sited close by, retaining a scholastic connection despite the passing of many years.

A Selection of Memories from Churchtown

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Churchtown

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

We moved to Churchtown in '61 from the North East. Attended the junior school attached to St Cuthbert's church. Remember the area very well, Botanical Gardens especially. Used to go fishing there even though it was prohibited [which boys didn't!]. Left in 1970. Fond memories
I run this place now and we are about to re-furbish. Great memories of fantastic guests, team and just a great pub with a new story to tell every day!
