First Memories

A Memory of Cleland.

This was the year I was born in what was then seen as Parkside because it was the top half of the village. I was born in Knownoble Street and some of my most earliest memories were of being raised in a three generation household. Then of sneaking through a neighbourghs garden to get to the swing park. Of Scott's Farm where fresh milk came from every day and of Allen's shop where Besty was not only the teacher but the one that kept it running with her Mother. Then when I was a little older I moved closer to Allen's shop on Biggar Road right handy for the bus stop for going to and from School.

the shop was Bessy Allens she taught most of my family at the public school, I remember chasing Geordie Scotts cattle back into the field across from the ham and egg pit bing as a kid and the houses next to the tin Kirk I was born in Pattersons Building on the main street and can remember going over to the bowling green at the back of the welfare when my Grandpa was cutting the grass and setting out the rinks. I still have the silver Jack that was presented to my mother from the bowling club.
Can you remember Wilson McMillan the park keeper or is that before your time?
Or Joe Jordans father working in the old cooperative
Remember the tartan building that stood next to Biaggis chip shop next to the school , later was Martin Brennans paper shop, ahen I was a kid in Cleland the paper shop was beside Tamborinis Chip shop and was run by John Keeveny, Tam Browns shop was next to the old mans rest at the cross with the drapers shop beside it there was Aitkens shop down Omoa Road near where the bookies is now, Alex Mitchell had the Butchers shop up near where the bank is and the post office was run by Mrs. O'Hara until my Aunt Betty took it over, Pat Murray and my aunt Agnes delivered the post . about the only original business now is Baxters garage which was run by Bob Baxter and Andrew Baxter did the car repairs it was also at that time a blacksmiths forge.
Just a few of the memories I have and there are many more.
Idglect I actually went to school with Joe Jordan and Mary Blair who's relatives owned Tamborini's. I also loved going into Tamborini's John even when I moved away knew when I came back I was always in for a fish supper oh my God how I miss a good fish supper these day's. I also lived in front off Joe Jordan on Goreshall Street if my memory serves me right his parents back yard backed on to our back yard on Biggar Road. Also one of my best friends lived next door to me on the corner of Fraser Street. My Grandpa taught me how to lawn green bowl at the bowling green behind the miners welfare club in fact my father was a coal miner I had one sister younger than me. My Mom and her brother and sister were born down on Omoa Road just across from where the bookies stood in fact in front of the access to the park behind the protestant school. I attended St Mary's then on to St Adian's in Wishaw you have me curious now to know who you are and your age group if you are somebody went to school with or somebody I know. Mary Blair actually came to live with me for a while when she left Scotland. I also remember the butchers shop on the same side of the road as the co-op that was a branch of the butchers from Wishaw. Wow only one original business there now I bet I would not recognize it I have not been there in thirty years. I also remember the old brickwork I would go walking with my grandpa from the house up through the brickwork and onto the old Carlisle road and turn left then walk up and come down via Geordie Scotts land. Will give you a hint if you are my generation my Grandpa was George McCormick. I would love to hear back from you
