More about this scene
The Arena, built below the sea-front promenade, was billed as the 'premier open-air theatre of the north'. During the 1930s it staged three performances every day throughout the season and was a popular attraction for visitors. Here a party of girls, perhaps on a school trip, sit on the wall waiting for the show to begin.
