More about this scene
Situated in the village which was the home of the powerful Cobham family, one of the county's most distinguished families from the time of King John to James I, this half-timbered pub is opposite the church. It was the 'clean and commodious ale-house' where the love-lorn Mr Tracy Tupman stayed in Charles Dickens' 'Pickwick Papers'. A nearby stone inscription also recalls that it was close by that Mr Pickwick found his own remarkable 'inscribed stone'.
