More about this scene
Cockermouth Castle was built in the 13th century on a strategic site to guard the confluence of the rivers Cocker and Derwent. Modifications, including a barbican and outer gatehouse, were made by Edward III in the 14th century, but the castle fell into ruin after a Civil War siege by Royalist forces in 1648.
