I also visited Salisbury Avenue where my grandparents lived, every day, as I came home from the Grammar School. I regularly went past the barracks and along the Artillery Folly on my way to the bus station then in St Johns street. So much has altered. I remember from early years at Salisbury Avenue the lighting of the gas lamps, the visits of the shrimp and winkle man, and several horse drawn traders, who produced manure for my grandmothers garden!
I lived in Salisbury Avenue and once at St John's Green Junior School this was my route home. Playing on the walls of the assault course, amongst other escapades. Unfortunately, when I was back there in 2012 it was a building site. Infact, virtually all the barracks had disappeared and I had to find my way round with a Sat Nav!
We completed our Lance Bombadier Leadership training in these barracks, we referred to them as cavalry barracks (they are stables now). I was with 52 Bty 45 Fld Regt RA, stationed at Kirkee Barracks. One of my friends (Arnie Mccallion) was on stable duty but was allergic to horses, the BSM thought he was trying to pull a fast one - you should have seen his rash.
