More about this scene
The River Colne has always played a crucial role in the history of Colchester. Well before the Roman conquest, it had defended the north and east flanks of the capital of Cymbeline's kingdom, while the west flank was protected by a series of dykes and ramparts, some of which run south from the river. Long stretches of these Iron-Age defensive works survive on either side of Lexden, and were clearly intended to protect the west and south-west flanks of the town.
