Colnbrook In The 40s
A Memory of Colnbrook.
I was born in 1944 in F Ayres and Sons builders shop/house in High Street, Colnbrook opposite Kate and Dick Raynors house called The Cedars.
My mother was Kathleen Gale (nee Ayres) youngest child of Francis and Sarah Ayres whose siblings were Frank, Len, Fred, Bert and Reg---all my uncles.
I went to a Miss Colettes school in Slough from age 3 to 5 then to a school on the Bath road opposite the sheds which then were Heathrow Airport. Indeed whilst at that school we all were sent into the playground to watch the first Brabazon flight.
I left Colnbrook in 1951 when my parents, Kathleen and Ian headed North.
I may have been young when we lived in Colnbrook but still have many vivid memories----tennis at the Raynors, Lucas's shop and Hogan's shop. The land where I and my brother Geoffrey played which we had behind the Ayres house down to the ditch, etc
Love to share the late 1940s Colnbrook with anyone interested.
Richard Gale.
