More about this scene

For a short time in the middle of the 19th century, copper was mined in Dry Cove above Tilberthwaite. More important were the many stone quarries, from which was cut a fine green slate that has been used around the world. There is no hint of that industry, though, in this timeless picture, where children play by the waterside.
