A Memory of Corsham.
Moved here in 1942 were my father worked for B.A.C underground at Hawthorn as a foreman
working on gear inspection. With the recent 70th anniversary on Tv its only now that I realise what my parents had gone through with the bombing raids, long hours working for the War effort and rationing etc. For us kids, I was 7yrs old at the time, what an adventure moving to the country and lucky to live in Corsham. We kept chickens, and rabbits, grew vegetables and played in the fields and went camping with the scouts. On V.E day we built a huge bonfire at the end of Poynder Ave and had a party in the street and races for all the children. Corsham Regis school had just been built and with the headmaster Mr Hull, all the pupils old enough to use a spade dug up the the ground around the school and we all were given an allotment. One boy grew strawberries, what a treat during wartime! The winter of 1947 was harsh, no central heating in those days but all my friends and I could sledge down the hills nearby from January to March. Friends I remember were the Honeywells, Hobbs, Pedericks and Griffiths, who always had a party on Christmas Day to which I was invited.
Very happy memories and I always enjoy going back to visit Corsham Court the Park and lake.
