Coulsdon 1950's/1960's

A Memory of Coulsdon.

I lived in Coulsdon from 1955 first in Woodcote Grove Road opposite Smitham school which I attended from 1958-1963. I remember the shops vividly from the United Dairies to Sainbury's with the wall tiles and the cheese cutter and butter pats. I went to school with Barbara Busby, Gillian Honey and Jane Salter and the favourite playground activity was swapping scraps - does anyone remember them!

I left Smitham and went onto Old Palace Croydon and by then we had moved to Old Coulsdon, but my parents moved back to Coulsdon to Windermere Road, and when I married we also had a house (much later) in Windermere Road, so Coulsdon still holds fond memories for me

My grandparents owned 1 The Grove, which was divided in 2 flats and the local district nurse lived in the top part

I would love to know if anyone remembers me from Smitham Jane Bennett (nee Richards)

Hi having seen your memory of Coulsdon, I wonder if you know what happened to the 5th Coulsdon (St Francis) Girl Guide Company in Rickman Hill? I have a newspaper cutting from 27th September 1957 with photos of some of the Guides - Linda Benham, Pat Fuller, Pauline Lanning, Rita Jetten, Ruby Kent. Maybe you might remember some of them? If the Guide company is no longer in existence maybe I should contact a local history group as I have an interesting book put together by Ruby Kent about guiding.
