When Basil Spence designed the new cathedral, he incorporated the ruins of St Michael’s into the scheme of things: the old church in effect became the new cathedral’s vestibule. Spence’s design was attacked by traditionalists for being too modern; others saw it as a statement of Coventry’s renewal following the blitz. His use of curves helped to disguise the fact that the nave of the new building was only 270 ft long and 80 ft wide: quite small in cathedral terms.
