Crakehall, The Village 1900

More about this scene

Crakehall, 1 mile north of Bedale, is two villages in one - this is Little Crakehall, with its race (left) for three corn and flax mills. Just downstream is the restored water mill, now producing stoneground wholemeal flour. Here on the right is the former Primitive Methodist chapel of 1897, now a house. The barn is still here, but the central houses have been redeveloped. Great Crakehall to the right and up the hill has the village green with St Gregory's church, the school and the cricket

A Selection of Memories from Crakehall

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Crakehall

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Relatives of my mum, she is 85 years young, originally ran the Malt Shovel Inn in Crakehall. My mum was born in 1925 so this must have been the 1920s to 1930s. I have old photos of the Malt Shovel then but can find no records of them.
I was married in this church on 23rd December 1950 to Eunice Ethel Smith who lived at High Mill Cottage.
