Cranham, Prinknash Abbey Bells c.1960

More about this scene
The foundations of the new monastic building are well under way in this photograph. When it was completed in the 1960s, the uncompromisingly modern abbey was at the centre of controversy: it was hailed by some as a fine example of functional architecture, and criticised by others as stark and featureless. Perhaps easier on the eye is the pottery for which Prinknash is well known.
