More about this scene

It is difficult to connect the town of Cranleigh with its name, which means 'clearing of the herons, or cranes'. Although it retains some villagey characteristics, and was once important in the Wealden iron industry, it is very much nowadays a small town. The foreground in this view is now occupied by a roundabout and Village Way, which leads off to the right and the Cranleigh Leisure Centre.

The Old Railway Hotel

The old Railway Hotel previously occupied the adjacent timber-clad building to the south west of the Cranley Hotel before it closed its doors in 1910. It was then converted into 2 dwellings and a laundry in an adjoining barn. It is now 3 dwellings known as 1 (Oaklea), 2 and 3 Laundry Cottages. Kagans Newsagents
My brother, Tim, was a paper boy at Kagans newsagents in mid 1960's. I was 7 or 8 at the time. I helped my brother do his round one day just for the fun of it. When we got back to Kagans news agent my brother picked up his pay. Mr Kagan, not wanting to leave me out, got my brother to buy me a bar of chocolate for helping him. If I remember correctly it was a Mars bar.

Old Bank House, High Street, Cranleigh
My father was part of the family business, H Freemantle and Sons, who were coal merchants for many years in Cranleigh. During the 1950's and 60's we had our office in the Old Bank House at the entrance to the railway station. I believe it was knocked down to build Stocklands in later years. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
