More about this scene
Tilgate Mansion was situated about a mile south of the town on the edge of Tilgate Forest, part of the woodlands that comprise St Leonards, Tilgate and Worth Forests; they run in a swathe from Horsham towards East Grinstead on the thin, agriculturally near-useless soils of the Weald. The mansion was built in the 1860s for a London banker. It is a curious amalgam of French Second Empire elements with Jacobethan, all in the local sandstone. The mansion was demolished in the early 1960s.
