A Memory of Crayford.

I loved the walk into Crayford High Street at the walk at back way - it was so nice as a child, not built on. Went back years later, sorry to say ruined, but I do have a memory of the swan getting shot, it was a big shock to all. Not much has changed really. I remember what we called the flea house - only place in Crayford, my aunt used to, in old times, work at this place, and yelling when the film broke lol. I used to walk from Maiden Lane to Binks fish and chip shop - Friday night fish and chips - 7 cod, two shillings worth of chips, change from 10 bob 2 shillings old money. I have lots of memories, some great, some sad, too many for today to tap in. Nearly 80 in May , so hope some folks I knew in 1947 to 1969 remember the school and the sweet shop - open in a house - walking to school and the corner shop were you could get tick in the days lol, old mother Jackson we called her. We had to walk from top of Iron Mill Lane to open and walked home when closing time. So many things - and local shops no big supermarkets, Dartford you went to for many things you could not buy in Crayford. Oh, must not forget GREYHOUND track had to each Sat morning walk down and get the book on running times etc that night, 9 old pence lol . Sheila Godsell

I lived in West Dartford from my birth in 1957 until I moved away in 1987. Crayford was our nearest town. When I was very small, my Mum would take me into the Parade Gardens by the river Cray so that I could eat my bag of sweets which she had bought me in that delightful, old-fashioned sweet shop upon the corner by the dog track. The Gardens were beautifully planted with huge mature shrubs between which ran mysterious little paths. Just right for a little boy with his red-and-yellow scooter! During my childhood, all of the lovely shrubs were grubbed out of the Gardens. I have since learned that they were deemed too dangerous in a town centre. I have always loved buses and was fascinated by Timpson's Coach Depot in Crayford Road. There were always one or two very old veterans at the back which I guess were retained as spares or for contract work. The old coach depot closed in the late sixties and became a tile showroom. I wonder whether anyone remembers the original railway station which was of timber (as Bexley Station still is)? This really had the feel of the country station which, of course, it had originally been. This beautiful structure was replaced by an ugly concrete affair which has had to be replaced again in more recent times. When I knew Crayford its past had not been completely destroyed and it was recognizable as a village/small country market town.
