Cressing is an expanding village just to the south of Braintree. It has its own railway-station, formerly known as Bulford station. The house on our left, with the lofty fir trees, is called The Firs to this day. The cottage opposite was at one time the village post office.

I was moved to explore the interest in Hatches Farm, Coggeshall Road by Winifred Murray in the first edition of the Braintree book. I was a grandson of Fred and Nellie Crozier during the years of war, together with my mother, Ethel Lewis, 1941-1946 dad (Dick) being away on military duties.
Any chance to share memories on Hatches would be really appreciated and I look forward to any responce from Winifred or her relations. Thanks. Together with news of former pupils of BCHS 1953-1960!
Mark Pierson (hello Mark - we know each other) suggests the Peculiar People's chapel was in the Street - but it was definitely situated at Hawbush Green, at least during my early childhood in the Fifties. I distinctly remember hearing services held there as the congregation sang with gusto and without the benefit of any accompaniment - it was round the corner from where I used to live. This picture must have been taken when the former 'Peculiar People' chapel visible on the right of the photograph (one of the few buildings then on that side) was built. It has just celebrated its centenary. Now 'Cressing Evangelical Church' it was opened in August 1909, and is very much still in use for regular worship. I live nearby, in Braintree, and my late father came as Pastor there in 1968. If you ...see more
