Heading south-west towards Dorset we reach Crewkerne, another medieval market town that later specialised in sail- making for the Royal Navy until steam supplanted sail. It is a stone town, with one of the finest 15th-century churches in the county, largely built from the wool wealth of the town. This view in the Market Square gives a good idea of the town's high-quality Georgian and early 19th-century stone houses.

My great-grandfather William Chard Howe was the last Howe to run the family painting and decorating business in Crewkerne, following in the footsteps of his father Thomas and his grandfather George, who seems to have been a painter and gilder of some note.
