Nostalgic memories of Crosby's local history

Share your own memories of Crosby and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Does anyone remember having their coal delivered by Frank (Hamilton) and Alf. Nellie Hamilton, used to answer the telephone. Nellie was my Great Aunt and Godmother. The coal business, Rainfords of Endbutt Lane and had been started by my Great Grandfather, Joseph Rainford. Any recollections would be much appreciated.
Does anyone remember the Orange Spot cafe opposite Crown buildings in Crosby village? It opened upstairs at night on Fridays and would have local bands. I wonder if anyone can remember who played there in the mid/late 60s.
Before Jospice opened we did a lot of fund-raising for it and stayed one Saturday night after a religion session with Brother ?? - in the morning one young lady whio may remain nameless broke about peeing outside, we had a public address system and commentated on the likely occurrences, the police came...we shut up.
A great place to grow up. All day when off school, girls and boys would play manhunt and see who could go the highest on the swings. The park keeper Jock; we'd hide when it was time to close the park. Paddling in the boating lake... great times.
My memories are from Moor Lane when Weirs had the Petrol pump on the pavement at the side of the old Maude Smith and opposite to the DD England farm with the little dairy on the front where you bought the most gorgeous homemade ice cream served by a lady called Mrs Faiclough and she had a daughter Ann.I recon that the cobbles are still there at the side of the doit yourself as that was were the cows used to go up ...see more
I was born in Walton Hospital 1943 and spent a good part of my childhood living in Seaforth. Later in my early 20's moving to Coronation Drive, Crosby. Between 1970 and 71, I worked on the construction of the new container dock in Seaforth. During the massive excavation works near the head of the dock about 60 foot down, we came across an underground stream. The spoil was sand but at the Caradoc pub ...see more
Mr Norman has not mentioned the surname of the two ladies who owned the pawnbrokers it was Brenning or perhaps Brennan .Their shop was full of old old china and house bits and pieces. The stock looked as if it had been there undisturbed since Victorian times; indeed I often wondered if they ever cleaned their display. Nearby was Andrews the ironmongers, Mr Andrews ran a very tidy shop with a good ...see more
I am looking for anyone who went to the Wintergardens dances on a Friday night or even St Lukes dance on a Saturday night between 1964 to 1967. they were great places to listen to live groups and meet new friends. I did work at Coronation park and the Pioneer laundry. If you remember these places please get in contact. Regards Jeff Gilford
I spent my infant years in Crossender Rd. In the winter we had hills nearby adjacent to the Southport to L'pool line. We used to roll little snow balls until they achieved a massive girth of a metre. Sometimes they would get out of control and smash into someone's fence or greenhouse (of course we kids were no where to be seen). My later misspent youth was engaging in ...see more
I went to Crosby Road School from 1959 'til 1963 and served at Crosby Fire Station from 1966 'til 1970. I remember getting my very first dog from a pet shop in either Fir Road or Sycamore in 1967 on my way home from a night shift at the Fire Station. Does anyone remember this shop and the name of it??
