More about this scene
A 17th-century packhorse bridge spans the River Yarrow, and beyond the cottages rises the square, battlemented tower of St Michael and All Angels' Church. Although few village buildings pre-date the 17th century, Croston is an ancient place. Tradition holds that St Aidan preached here in 651 and erected a cross, from which its name derives, 'the place of the cross'.
