Although not the highest point in Essex, Danbury certainly commands an impressive position. Drivers of vehicles such as the gig in the foreground, not only had the gradient to contend with, but also the uneven road surface. It would certainly have been a challenge for the early cycle clubs who met here in the late 19th century.
