Daventry, The Wheatsheaf Hotel c.1955

More about this scene
This old coaching inn is one of many in Daventry which stood on the London to Holyhead turnpike. Founded in 1610, it is reputed to be the place where Charles I stayed before the Battle of Naseby in 1645. It is now a nursing home for the elderly. The monkey-puzzle tree, which still stands, has fascinated generations of children. It is interesting to note that the signwriter who worked on the wall to the left must have kept his eyes on his job - if he had looked up he would have noticed there should be a space in Wheat Sheaf!
