Diss A Very Pleasant Bolthole

A Memory of Diss.

I had many memorable times in Diss.

When living in Cambridge, I often, unexpectedly for him, dropped in to see Mr Robert Stubbs who had been living by himself and his toy poodle since his wife's passing many years earlier.

Despite being in his eighties, he was still as sharp as a tack and stuck to his daily routines of listening to his vast record collection, keeping up with the news and fussing over his pet...

He lived in a moderately sized Tudor 'mansion' on Denmark Street.
When there with my mother one Christmas, we had a real ball at the Park Hotel when all of the locals there were fully decked out in interesting costumery. Our personal favourite was a lady dressed up as a nun which did not prevent her from having a real bender of a knees-up!!

To be sure, Diss was a very warm, tight and caring community.

Being on a slight rise is quite unique for most of the land from Cambridge through both Suffolk and Norfolk.

So it was good to drive up Denmark St for the rare experience. I took a few European and Japanese female friends with me on occasion as I introduced them to pieces of East Anglia which they never knew existed --- Grimes Graves and Diss were well liked. Cousin Bob was thrilled to have the United Nations visit him so all was good!!

As Bob had no children, it's sad to say that I have no known roots there now to keep in touch with.
