The house dates from 1591, and stands on the site of a pre-Norman manor held by Dodo, a royal forester under Edward the Confessor and from whom the village takes its name. By the 19th century the house had deteriorated, but Sir Thomas Acland, who preserved much of its surviving medieval decoration, restored it.
