More about this scene

Caption for Doncaster, Frenchgate 1903: This view looks south. On the left we have Porter & Sons, wholesale glass and china merchants, and the imposing bulk of the Guildhall with its porticoed entrance supported on Corinthian columns. Many of the buildings on the right hand side of Frenchgate were demolished in the 1960s to make way for the Arndale Centre.

Memories of Doncaster, Frenchgate 1903

I have a letter written by my ancestor Ann Stanuell to her sister Elizabeth Stanuell & parents John and Ann Stanuell while on a coaching trip from Doncaster to London. The letter is addressed to "Mr Stanuell, French Gate, Doncaster, Yorks. Decr 8th 1807". Another letter gives the address as French Gate opposite the Angel Inn.
