Donnington School
A Memory of Donnington.
I went to school here in the 50s/60s; it was known as Wroxeter and Uppington C of E School. There were just two classes, the big class run by Miss Thomas the Headmistress and the little class run by Mrs Saltmarsh. Our dinner lady was Mrs Habberley, after lunch two of us used take the left-overs in a bucket to the buildings next to the school and feed it to the pigs. We went to Shrewsbury swimming baths once a week after lunch, our bus also collected children from the Atcham Camp and Atcham School. Our annual sports day was held at Atcham School and we had to walk from Donnington along the A5, we were shattered before the games started. The scripture man came once a year, I think it was around Easter time, it was so frightening and we all prayed not to get any questions wrong, if we got them all right we could go home early... I never went early. We had three playgrounds, one for the girls with outside toilets and the same for the boys, with a high wall in between, and another playground at the front of the school along the road for everyone to play on. We loved watching the traffic go by as there was very little of it. Mr Richardson the milkman would come every moring with our bottle of milk and as a treat sometimes we would have a bottle of ki-ora.
