One of the very finest fortresses in England, Dover Castle dominates the town and harbour below, with the top of the keep standing 465 feet above sea level. This structure, and the surrounding curtain wall, was built by Henry II in the 12th century at a cost of £7000, but the first fortifications were constructed by King Harold in 1064. Further reinforcements and additions were made over succeeding centuries, until it was regarded as impregnable. Some of the walls are eight metres thick, and the chalk cliff below is honeycombed with passages excavated by invading French troops in the 13th century.
