Drakeholes, Gatehouses
A Memory of Drakeholes.
Drakeholes is a great little spot on the Chesterfield Canal. Famous for its tunnel and the White Swan pub, or "Mucky Duck" as it was once known. Above the tunnel sat two small derelict Gatehouses, once the grand entrance to "Wiseton Hall". The Gatehouses were thought to have been built around 1770 (before the canal was opened in 1777) and now (2013) have been recently restored to their former glory by their current owners. Great to see that we as a nation are not prepared to lose our history. The Gatehouses were lived in by the gate-keeper and his wife; a kitchen / living area in one and bedroom in the other. Often the tale is told of the gate-keeper and his wife going "candle in hand" between the gatehouses, to bed. The onlookers must have been in the Mucky Duck to see this !
