Downside Estate

A Memory of Dunstable.

I remember Downside Estate, Morecombe Road (I think it was Road) very well as one of my best friends Pauline lived there and we used to go down to The Greyhound pub, High Street South, on Saturday nights. She used to have some fun parties too. I haven't thought about those in years.

Yes Peter it was Morecombe 'Road' - The bus in the picture was number six - and this termanus was Oakwood Avenue - immediately to the right - in front of that bus in Mountview Avenue and the number 6A used to turn along Mountview Avenue and right into Southwood Road and terminated there and was known as the Kensworth stop - no idea why - As a delinquent I use to to wait with my mates at the end of Britain Street until we saw the bus stop outside the Tesco supermarket opposite Dunstable square and race it to Downside Estate - As it had other stops to make we were the victors many times and fit into the bargain and could then spend our bus fares on sweets - keeping us fitter lol
I noticed that for some unknown reason Morecombe is now spelt Morcom - There use to be an entrance to the Spandits Sports Club in Morecombe Road - which was situated behind the Empire Rubber Company
They occasional had live gigs there - although it was only the size of a large garden shed - it was always well attended
Someone informed me - I maybe mistaken and it was always spelt Morcom and I maybe getting mixed up with the northern town of the same name - Someone else said they think it was spelt - Morcomb

I'd love to know - however Peter - no one questions it was definately 'Road'
It was spelt Morcom Road, I checked an old map. I remember the Sports Club too, I haven’t thought about that place in years.
