More about this scene
This is Bishop Cosin's impressive Black Staircase; it stands in the angled tower between the Great Hall and the 12th- century building of Bishop Pudsey. Built in the early 1660s, the Black Staircase is one of the most impressive staircases of its time in the country. It is 17m high, and with the exception of the intricately carved softwood side panels, is made from oak.
