Memories Of Walpole Park

A Memory of Ealing.

I was at Ealing Grammar School from 1968-1973. I remember a boy kicking a football close to this pond and his shoe coming off and flying in to the water. We had a history teacher - Mr Hayter - who was a keen fisherman and the next day - with a large audience to cheer him on - he went in to the pond in waders and found the shoe with a large hook.

I was at Ealing Grammar from 67-74 and well remember Tony Hayter. He taught us history and showed us how to make miniature cannons from sticks of chalk. The other, more notable memory, is of him demonstrating a cross-bow in class, firing a bolt thru a metal sheet, embedding it into the wall behind ! Ah, where was health and safety then !
We had the same lessons and now you reminded me about the crossbow. We did discuss the fact it could go through a wall. Then once during lunchtime, he had a special talk about fishing. He brought a pike and may have dissected it.
Absolutely marvelous! Thanks for your memories of this lovely park!

Mr Hayter was an absolute legend, his history lessons were a true inspiration - if often straying somewhat from the set corriculum.
The only lesson where you didn't want the bell to ring!
Sorry to have missed the 50th re-union, stage one of my own at Brentford FC some weekends, along with Graham Ball, Gary Davies and Jed Dimohowski. Happy Days!
