More about this scene
Visible evidence of medieval Sultan is sparse, but remnants of the castle motte survive to the west of the parish church. Once on the edge of Leicester Forest, this visually undistinguished town became in the 19th century a focal point of the framework knitting industry. The medieval four-stage tower of the church with its recessed crocketted spire dates from around 1400, but the remainder of the building is good High Victorian work, in the main by Richard Cromwell Carpenter (1812-1855), architect of Lancing College, Sussex (1854) and Inverness Cathedral (1855).
