More about this scene
The Co-operative movement has its roots in north west England, and these pictures illustrate well its position in this community. A few years earlier, one local commentator had written: 'the other side [of Earle Street] has been considerably improved with the growth of the local Co-operative Society. The large central premises have taken the place of some old one-storey shops; the new butchery department and offices take the place of a small brick hutment shop with the addition of a butcher's shop and house which stood there'.
